Young, successful, good-looking: Patrick Bateman embodies the spirit and values of the 80s almost perfectly. He earns the money for his exclusive label Bewusstsein on Wall Street. He eats in the most exclusive restaurant, trains in the right gym, and hangs out in the hottest club. Bateman first chooses his friends based on their share capital and the design of their business cards. He has a beautiful girlfriend, an even more beautiful lover, and a secretary who adores him. But behind the perfect surface there is a monster. At night, Bateman roams through New York and - fueled by cocaine and designer drugs - kills bums and prostitutes. Increasingly taken up by his double life, he walks a fine line between fantasy and reality.
Mary Harron has dared to adapt the cult novel by Bret Easton Ellis, which was considered unfilmable and which caused a sensation in the early 90s. She stylizes the original into a bitter satire on the unbridled lifestyle of the Golden 80s. She succeeds in this thanks not least to an outstanding Christian Bale.
