Wri­ting with Fi­re

"Khabar Lahariya" is the first newspaper in India run by Dalit women. The Dalits are among the "untouchables" in the caste system and although discrimination against them is officially prohibited, they struggle with condescension and disrespect every day. The fearless women face the challenge of a digitalized world in their profession and learn to use their mobile phones as weapons to expose corrupt systems and abuses through investigative journalism. Their fight to make illegal miners, mafia hierarchies and to solve crimes against women visible is fraught with great danger - husbands or families often oppose their work. Undeterred and supported by the success of their publications, the young women stand up to patriarchal structures and provide an insight into the complex structure of cultural interrelationships in India.
