Tragicomedy, World Cinema – Bhutan 2023
A warm-hearted political satire from Bhutan - full of mischief and lightheartedness
In 2006, modernization takes hold in the Kingdom of Bhutan. While the population is just discovering James Bond, television and the Internet, the king decides to further modernize his country by calling elections to introduce a parliamentary system. But as soon as political change is imminent, the lust for power begins to heat up the minds of the otherwise gentle population. The film follows the journeys of three characters whose paths cross against a breathtaking backdrop: Election director Tshering Yangden is supposed to conduct test elections in the mountain villages and a young monk is supposed to find two firearms for his master's mysterious ceremony, while an American weapons collector is looking for an old rifle.
"Luana" was a huge success at the Rosenmattpark Film Nights in 2022 with almost five hundred viewers! "The Monk and the Gun" is the second feature film by Bhutanese director Pawo Choyning Dorji.
"A mischievous parable that continually subverts our expectations." WOZ
"A wonderful contrast to our fast-paced, ambitious and profit-oriented way of life. You can sit back and immerse yourself in a slow-paced, heartwarming story." arttv.ch
