What would happen if you met yourself while walking one night? In Fyodor Dostoyevsky's “The Doppelganger,” the young civil servant Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin meets such a doppelganger. Not only does he appear in his apartment and take over his job, he also seems to be a better, more popular version of the confused protagonist. If the relationship between the two twin Golyadkins begins as friendly and brotherly, the Kafkaesque farce gradually comes to a head: the doppelganger is praised by his superior, cheered and admired by colleagues and friends, and finally he apparently even stalks Klara Olsufyevna, Golyadkin's beloved. A competition arises between the two, reality and illusion become blurred - until Golyadkin is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. But who is the real Golyadkin and who is the doppelganger? Based on Dostoyevsky's early work "The Doppelgänger", the author Katja Petrowskaja, who won the renowned Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in 2013 and is now writing an opera libretto for the first time, and the composer Lucia Ronchetti dedicate this opera to psychological social satire. Lucia Ronchetti is one of the most renowned composers of today. Her works have premiered at the Berlin State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Frankfurt Opera and the National Theater Mannheim, among others. She is also currently the artistic director of the Venice Music Biennale.
