1759. Mauritius gehört dem Königreich Frankreich. Die Sklaven Massamba und Mati leben auf der Plantage von Eugène Larcenet in Angst und Mühsal. Massamba träumt, dass seine Tochter Mati frei ist. Sie wünscht sich, dem Horror zu entkommen. Eines nachts flieht Mati. Die Sklavenjägerin Madame La Victoire nimmt die Verfolgung auf. Massamba bleibt keine Option: er flieht ebenfalls und wird zum "Marron", der endgültig mit der kolonialen Ordnung bricht.
