Midd­le Ages on La­ke Con­stan­ce - Eco­no­mic area bet­ween the Alps and the Rhi­ne Falls

In the Middle Ages, the area between the Alps, Lake Constance and the Rhine developed into a closely interwoven and important economic, transit and trading area. Cities sometimes joined together to form alliances, introduced a uniform currency system and formed hubs for regional and international trade. A large part of the goods traffic in and out of this economic area was shipped via Lake Constance and the Rhine. Since the Rhine Falls were impassable for transport ships, the goods had to be loaded onto wagons in Schaffhausen, transported through the city to Neuhausen and shipped again below the Rhine Falls. Thanks to the associated customs revenue and other lucrative services, Schaffhausen became a wealthy city in the Middle Ages. Around 150 fascinating finds from the period around 1000 to 1500 from four countries tell of the medieval world of life around agriculture and crafts, trade and shipping between the Alps and the Rhine Falls. Escape Room "The Archive": An exciting escape room for the exhibition lets you delve deep into the past! There are tricky puzzles to solve about a midwife, a hairdresser's apprentice and a salt thief. For 2-6 people, three levels of difficulty, duration 30-60 minutes. Use of the escape room is included in the entrance fee. A joint exhibition by the St. Gallen Historical and Ethnographic Museum, the St. Gallen Cantonal Archaeology Department, the Thurgau Museum of Archaeology in Frauenfeld, the Office of Archaeology of the Canton of Thurgau, the Baden-Württemberg State Archaeological Museum in Konstanz, the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation, the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz, the Office for Culture, Archaeology, Principality of Liechtenstein, the Liechtenstein State Museum in Vaduz, the Museum of All Saints Schaffhausen, the Schaffhausen Cantonal Archaeology Department, the Rhaetian Museum Chur and the Archaeological Service of Graubünden.
