In a family art tour, art historian Louisa Wahl provides insights into the working worlds around Lake Constance.
We're doing something! Working worlds in art on Lake Constance.
The art on Lake Constance and the Rhine mostly shows the idyll. It is characteristic of the painting around the lake: sunsets on the water, romantic bays, the imposing Rhine Falls, the unspoilt Appenzellerland with the Säntis. This year's special exhibition in the Rosgarten Museum, on the other hand, is looking for artistic representations of the working world in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Lake Constance region between Bregenz and Schaffhausen, Upper Swabia and Eastern Switzerland is also an important area of industrial history. Here chimneys once smoked, weaving machines rattled, engines, airplanes, cars and ships were built. At the same time, traditional agriculture and alpine farming and traditional crafts existed alongside the factories of the industrial era.
