The Lunies family has long since ceased to exist: life has caused the paths of parents and children to drift apart. The elderly Lissy Lunies is overwhelmed by her demented husband, and due to her illness she herself does not have much time left to live. Her son Tom is a conductor and a kind of surrogate father to his ex-girlfriend's newborn child. He is currently working with his best friend on the performance of his composition "Sterben". The two of them keep getting into arguments. Meanwhile, Tom's sister Ellen begins an affair with a married man and becomes caught up in a seemingly irreversible love and cocktail frenzy. When death knocks on everyone's doors in almost grotesquely many appearances and forms, the family members meet again...
