The highly educated Ben (Viggo Mortensen) lives with his six children in the solitude of the mountains in the northwest of America out of conviction. He teaches them himself and not only teaches them above-average knowledge, but also how to hunt and survive in the wild. When his wife dies, he is forced to leave his self-created dropout idyll with his offspring and face the real world. In their old, rickety bus, the family sets off across the USA to the funeral, which is to take place at the grandparents' house. Their journey is full of comical and dramatic moments that challenge Ben's ideals of freedom and his ideas about parenting...
