Capernaum

Zain's parents are too poor to register him at birth. He has no papers and is thus deprived of his basic rights. But Zain is a fighter. He skillfully weaves his way through the streets of Beirut. In order to feed his numerous siblings, he carries goods for the grocery store of their ruthless landlord Assadd. His 11-year-old sister Sahar is to be married to Assadd, of all people. Zain does everything he can to prevent this - in vain. Finally, he runs away. He meets Rahil in an amusement park. She offers Zain shelter if he looks after her one-year-old son. When Rahil does not return one evening, Zain lovingly takes care of the little boy.

Nadine Labaki looks at the often hidden world of street children with great empathy, which she places at the center of her film. The extraordinary acting performances of the non-professional actors stand out. The result is a humanistic film with depth. «Capharnaüm» was awarded the prestigious Jury Prize in Cannes in 2018.
