In the far north, summer is short but intense: Mediterranean herbs grow on the steep slopes of the fjord landscapes, and traditional alpine farming is practiced in the mountains. The Hardangerfjord is Norway's orchard. Thanks to the mild climate, apples thrive there and are processed into cider. On June 23, St. John's Day is celebrated with a large fire.
