CAP SUR LA NOUVELLE-ZELANDE - Casino de Montbenon, Lausanne

The beaches of Agnès

Sunday, 21. July 2024

At the age of 80, the grand old lady of French film, Agnès Varda, has presented a cinematic autobiography and something like a reflection on her life's work. The result is not a monument, but a gift to the public. A puzzle about the full life of a great artist for whom the term filmmaker falls far short.

Agnès Varda, the great French film artist, has once again devoted herself to her favorite pastime: searching, collecting and rummaging. This time she has found her own life. Or, to be more specific, countless fragments of it. Photos, films, encounters, landscapes.

The result: an exuberant kaleidoscope of images and cheerfully melancholy memories of people and places that shaped her. Her parents' house in Brussels, carefree days in the small coastal town of Sète, training as a photographer in Paris, the 1960s, the far too short time she spent with Jacques Demy. America, China, Cuba, the beloved island of Noirmoutier, friends, companions. The birth of the daughter and the Nouvelle Vague.
