SRF two: Our brother, the idiot

We. 3. July - Th. 4. July 2024

2011, USA, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Jesse Peretz, Evgenia Peretz, David Schisgall, Yaron Orbach, Eric D. Johnson, Nathan Larson, Jacob Craycroft, Andrew Mondshein

Ned (Paul Rudd) may drive everyone around him crazy, but one thing is always clear to everyone: he means no harm - even when he sells marijuana to a policeman at the organic market. Once he's free again, his girlfriend (Kathryn Hahn) has left him and Ned has to stay with his sisters.

Mother of two Liz (Emily Mortimer) is cheated on by her husband (Steve Coogan) with the women he makes his documentaries about. Journalist Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) would sell her soul for a cover story in "Vanity Fair". And Natalie (Zooey Deschanel) avoids really getting involved in their relationship.

Ned soon moves from one to the other, because despite all their love, their patience with the good-natured guy is limited - also because the brother reveals without false consideration what is going wrong in each of their own lives.

Ned, played by Paul Rudd with disarming good nature, doesn't stumble through his film as a complete idiot in the style of "Dumb and Dumber", but as a walking mirror that lets his supposedly more sensible sisters look behind their facade and realize that he, the idiot, isn't actually the reason for their problems.

Emily Mortimer and Elizabeth Banks are just two of the prominent actors that filmmaker Jesse Peretz, who was heavily involved in the refreshing HBO series "Girls", has question the meaning of life with comedic understatement.
