Article 29 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which Switzerland ratified on May 15, 2014, requires that people with disabilities can fully participate in political and public life. Switzerland must ensure that people with disabilities have the same political rights as others and can exercise them on an equal basis.
However, a shadow report from March 2022 by the umbrella organization of disability organizations Inclusion Handicap shows that Switzerland still has some catching up to do in this area. What barriers still prevent people with disabilities from participating in politics? How can we remove these barriers? Where in politics, society and institutions does a rethink need to take place and who is responsible for finally making progress?
